Pet Insurance

Why Pet Insurance

Providing the best veterinary care for our pets is something very important to just about any pet owner. Unfortunately, doing that can often times be quite expensive. Surgery on an ear to remove a polyp can cost anywhere from $1,500 - $3,000, depending on where you are in the country. Surgery for hip dysplasia can cost anywhere from $2,500 - $5,000 depending on where you are in the country. Even being hospitalized for a few days for something relatively minor can cost $1,000.  For most people, vet bills like this are completely out of their reach, leaving them and their pet without any good options. One of the worst things in the world is to have to euthanize your pet because he/she needs treatment that you just can't afford. That is where pet insurance comes in!

Pet insurance is a lot like human medical insurance in many way. The biggest difference is most of the time you still have to pay the vet bills upfront and then get reimbursed by your pet insurance. There are a wide range of monthly premiums, deductibles, and coverage depending on your needs. Most insurance companies will not cover routine care such as vaccines and spay/neuter. But some will. Some pet insurance companies will even cover some holistic care for your pet, such as acupuncture.

Pet insurance is something we highly value and desire each of our kittens to have when they leave for their forever homes. In our Health Contract it states that if you are unable to keep the kitten you get from us for any reason, at any point in his/her life, the kitten is to be returned to us. This means, if you are unable to provide the necessary medical care for your kitten, he/she has to be brought back to us and we will treat him/her with our veterinarian. However, this also means that you will not get the kitten back, and you will not be given a refund of any amount in any way, shape, or form. The best thing for the kitten, you as the kitten's family, and us, is for you to be able to afford to provide any medical care needed for your kitten, regardless of the cost. This is why we value pet insurance so much, and require families to have pet insurance on our kittens.
Trupanion

Starting in November 2024, all of our kittens will leave our Cattery with a *FREE 30-day insurance policy through Trupanion.

Trupanion is a trust pet insurance provider that has been operating for many years. Their Breeder Partnership is a newer program that allows breeders to send their puppies or kittens home with *free coverage for the first 30 days they are in their new home. This gives great peace of mind to everyone.

When your kitten leaves our Cattery with you, you will have 24 hours to activate your kitten's policy. This is quick and easy and doesn't even require a credit card. Your kitten will then be immediately covered. Should you need to take your kitten to the vet within the first 30 days (for something other than vaccines or routine care), Trupanion will pay your vet directly.

You will be contractually obligated to active this 30-day policy, and send us proof, or your kitten's Health Contract will be void.

*Families in New York are unfortunately not eligible for the free policy, as New York State law does not allow it. Families in New York will still get the 30-day policy, however, they will be required to pay for the policy upon activation. You will still get immediate coverage and direct vet payments.

Also starting in November 2024, all families will be contractually obligated to keep pet insurance on their kitten until the kitten is 18 months of age. We recommend keeping pet insurance on your kitten for life, as when coverage starts as a kitten that is the cheapest time to start a policy. You do not have to stay with Trupanion past the initial 30-day policy, but you do need a policy to start coverage as soon as the Trupanion policy ends.

Having your kitten covered by insurance is in the best interest of you, your kitten, and us. Illness and sometimes injury are unfortunately part of being a pet owner. Should your pet need to be hospitalized or have surgery, your pet insurance policy will likely cover the majority of the bill, leaving you with a much more manageable deductible or copay. The last thing we want is to have to take your kitten back because you can't afford the necessary vet bills. It isn't fair to the kitten, and it makes an already stressful and upsetting time even worse for him/her. It also creates a hardship on us, as we then have to treat your kitten out of pocket since insurance companies will not cover something that has already been diagnosed.

Should you decide not to keep pet insurance on your kitten, the amount of compensation we will give, should we need to honor our Health Contract will be much less than if you have insurance coverage on your kitten.

Pet Insurance Providers

If you do not want to stick with Trupanion insurance, here are a few pet insurance companies, with links, we are aware of, and know to be good. We suggest thinking about what things you need and want to have covered for your kitten, and then find an insurance company that will cover as many of those as possible. Also, be aware that most all insurance companies have waiting periods (sometimes of different lengths for different problems), and do not cover pre-existing conditions. This is why putting pet insurance on your kitten as soon as possible is important. Most insurance companies also do not cover routine care, vaccines, fell/tick medication, or spay/neuters.

These are just a few of the pet insurance companies out there. There are also a few other places that offer pet insurance, such as Chewy and Care Credit. Sometimes your own health insurance company or homeowners policy will offer pet insurance as well. Do some looking around and see which one is the best fit for you.
Other Options

If you don't feel like pet insurance is right for you, after your kitten turns 18 months old, you do have a couple other options. Care Credit and Scratch Pay both offer a 0% interest line of credit that can be used to pay just about any veterinarian in the US. Care Credit is more of a true credit card, where as Scratch Pay is a one-and-done kind of thing.

Fursure is another option that is kind of neat. In a nut shell, you open a bank account with them and then put money into the account. It acts sort of like a savings account, but you get a debit card to the account, and every time you put money into the account, or spend money out of the account at certain places, you earn points. Those points can then be redeemed for different things, including veterinary care at any vet's office.

Finally, a good old fashion savings account is another option you could go with. Most people suggest you have a minimum of $10K saved up to be able to cover any medical expense that may come up with your pet.
